Before the dawn of time and before the world was created, the frost giant Ymir was born in Ginnungagap of the meltwater where the ice, frost and fog of a place called Niflheim met the lava, sparks, and fire of a place called Muspelheim. Ymir is later killed by his sons, Odin among them. His flesh became the earth and his blood the oceans.
